In order to focus on what’s being said, you must control your spare thinking time. Spare thinking time means that you can think 3-5 times faster than the speaker.

If you do not control it, you will use that time to begin thinking about what you will say next instead of focusing on what is being said.
Active Listening techniques will keep you focused:
Paraphrasing
Asking Questions
Eye Contact
Removing Distractions
Don’t forget that people perceive not listening as not caring so stay focused on what‘s being said instead of how you will respond.
